Aldo Maria Camillo, who honed his skills at brands including Valentino, Berluti and Cerruti and who launched his namesake brand in 2019 at Pitti Uomo, has been revving up his business.
With sourcing and manufacturing support from Hirofumi Kurino of United Arrows, he’s been turning out soft, sophisticated tailored clothing collections since the end of the pandemic.
Camillo said he never designs with trends in mind. Instead, he’s always thinking of ways to translate the ease and comfort of streetwear into traditional tailored clothing — something he used to do as a kid growing up in Rome.
“I’d take my father’s and grandfather’s suits, and wear them with skater shoes and a T-shirt,” Camillo said. “When a new generation encounters a traditional garment, that’s when the magic happens.”
His latest collection featured a lineup of signature soft tailoring, such as double-breasted jackets made from stonewashed silk, and with handmade button holes. A sage-colored jacket made from wool and mohair had an artfully wrinkled surface, which Camillo achieved by tossing the fabric in a tumble dryer.
Another tailored jacket made from ultra-lightweight Japanese nylon was ideal for travel, or a last-minute rain shower, while an off-white tuxedo with black lapels exuded rock ’n’ roll cool.
Long, sheer and sensual organza shirts could be slipped under a dinner jacket — or worn as a nightgown — a testament to the designer’s magic hands, and versatility.
